Four Types of Cooktops, Four Different Fixes

Each cooktop heats in its own way, so the repair depends on which kind you have.

Gas Cooktops and Rangetops

Igniters, spark modules, burner heads and gas valves. Pro-style rangetops from Wolf and Thermador use sealed burners.

Electric Radiant Glass-Tops

Radiant elements under smooth glass. Common repairs are elements, infinite switches, hot surface lights and glass tops.

Induction Cooktops

Heat pans with magnetic energy. Repairs focus on power boards, coils, cooling fans and touch controls.

Downdraft Cooktops

Pull smoke down through a vent in the counter. Fan motors, filters and blower housings need care.

What Makes Induction Cooktops Different

Induction cooktops are fast, safe and popular in new Peninsula kitchens. They also work differently than gas or electric, which changes how we fix them.

  • Cookware matters. Pans must be magnetic. Aluminum, copper and glass pans won't heat unless they have a magnetic base.
  • Electronics run the show. Power boards and coils do the heating, so most repairs involve testing circuits, not burners.
  • Cooling fans are key. A small fan keeps the electronics cool. If cabinet space underneath is blocked, the cooktop can shut off from heat.
  • Error codes tell a story. Each brand uses its own codes, and they point us to the right board.

Something Wrong Right Now?

Emergency Cooktop Repair

Some cooktop problems are more than annoying. Here's when to stop cooking and what to do.

Element Stuck On

If an element or zone won't turn off, switch off the breaker right away. A stuck relay can overheat pans and nearby items.

Cracked Glass

Stop using the cooktop and cut the power. Spills can seep through cracks onto live wires. The glass can usually be replaced.

Care Tips

Keep Your Cooktop Working Like New

A little care goes a long way with built-in cooktops.

  • Wipe spills when cool, especially sugary ones, which can pit glass.
  • Use flat-bottomed pans that sit fully on the burner or zone.
  • Don't slide heavy pots on glass. Lift them to avoid scratches.
  • Keep the cabinet below clear so induction units can breathe.
  • Clean gas burner ports with a pin when flames look uneven.

FAQs

Cooktop Repair FAQs

Why won't my induction cooktop heat my pan?

Induction only works with magnetic cookware. Hold a fridge magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it doesn't stick firmly, the pan won't work. If the pan is fine, the zone may have a failed coil, power board or sensor.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

The glass top can usually be replaced as a part, so you don't need a whole new cooktop. Stop using it right away and turn off the power, because cracks can let spills reach live electrical parts.

Why does my cooktop element stay on high?

An element that stays on full heat even on a low setting usually has a stuck switch or a failed relay on the control board. Turn off the breaker and call us. This can overheat pans and is a fire risk.

Why are my cooktop touch controls not responding?

Check that the control lock isn't on. Water, steam or a pot resting on the controls can also confuse touch panels. If wiping and drying it doesn't help, the touch board may need repair.

What's the difference between a cooktop and a stove?

A cooktop is only the burner surface, built into your counter. A stove or range has burners and an oven in one unit. For freestanding ranges, see our stove repair page.

How should I clean a glass cooktop?

Let it cool, then use a cooktop cleaner and a soft pad. For burnt-on spots, a flat razor scraper held at a low angle works well. Avoid steel wool and gritty powders, which scratch the glass.

Do you repair downdraft cooktops?

Yes. We repair downdraft cooktops and their vent fans, which are common on JennAir and Viking models. Grease filters and fan motors are the usual issues.
