Spark Igniters and Modules
Create the spark that lights the gas. Cracked igniters or a bad module cause clicking with no flame.
A burner that clicks but never lights, or a range that won't heat, can stop dinner cold. If you're searching for stove repair near me, our Pacifica technicians fix gas, electric and dual-fuel ranges, often the same day. Gas problems are an emergency, and our phone line answers 24 hours.
Stoves are used almost every day, so wear shows up fast. These are the problems we fix most in Pacifica kitchens.
A range is two appliances in one: burners on top and an oven below. Here are the parts behind most calls.
Create the spark that lights the gas. Cracked igniters or a bad module cause clicking with no flame.
Sit behind each knob. Moisture from spills makes them click nonstop.
Spread the gas evenly. Clogged ports cause weak, uneven or yellow flames.
Control heat on electric coil burners. Burnt receptacles stop a coil from heating.
Heat the oven under your burners. Gas oven igniters weaken over time and take longer to light.
Control gas flow. Only a trained technician should work on these parts.
Ranges handle gas, high heat and electricity, so a few safety checks matter. We look at these on every stove visit.
If your vent hood is weak or noisy, our range hood repair team can help. Clean air matters even more in tightly sealed coastal homes that stay closed up on foggy days.
Gas problems are the most serious stove issue. Follow these steps first, then call us.
Don't light anything or flip switches. Open doors on the way out. Call PG&E or 911 from outside the home.
Turn off the breaker or unplug the range. Remove the burner caps and let everything dry. Constant sparking wears out the spark module.
Once it's safe, call (650) 491-1179. We'll find the cause and fix it. See our emergency appliance repair page for more.
Your range may run on gas, electricity or both. Each kind has its own common problems.
Burner igniters, spark switches, oven igniters and gas valves. The most common type in Pacifica homes on PG&E gas lines.
Burner receptacles, infinite switches, radiant elements and oven bake elements.
Gas burners on top with an electric oven below. Popular in pro-style ranges from Wolf, Viking and Thermador.
Use magnets to heat pots directly. Repairs often involve control boards, cooling fans and power modules.
| Symptom | Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| Nonstop clicking | Wet spark switch or bad module |
| Clicks, won't light | Misplaced cap or clogged ports |
| Yellow flame | Dirty burner or poor air mix |
| Coil won't heat | Bad coil, receptacle or switch |
| Gas oven slow to light | Weak oven igniter |
| Oven runs hot | Faulty temperature sensor |
After a spill, wipe the burner and let it dry fully before lighting it. Never spray cleaner straight onto the burner. Spray the cloth instead to keep moisture out of the igniter.

Constant clicking usually means moisture got into the spark switch or igniter after a spill or cleaning. Let it dry for a day with the burner caps off. If it still clicks, a spark switch or spark module needs replacing.
The burner cap may be out of place, the burner ports may be clogged with food, or the igniter may be cracked or dirty. Make sure the cap sits flat, clean the ports with a pin, and try again. If it still won't light, call us.
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue. A yellow, lazy flame often means clogged burner ports or a poor air mix. If you see soot on pots or smell gas, stop using the burner and have it checked.
Try swapping the coil with one that works. If the good coil works in that spot, the coil was bad. If not, the burner receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob is likely the problem.
It's a small metal bracket that keeps a freestanding range from tipping forward if a child climbs on the open door. Every freestanding range should have one. We check for it on every stove visit.
Turn off the burners if you can do it safely, don't flip any switches, open windows, leave the home and call PG&E or 911 from outside. Once the gas company clears the area, we can repair the stove.
This page covers freestanding and slide-in ranges, the oven-and-burner combo most homes have. For ovens built into the wall, see our oven repair page. For burner surfaces built into the counter, see cooktop repair.
