The Short Answer
Salt in ocean air settles on metal and speeds up rust and corrosion, while constant fog and humidity dry out and crack rubber seals, make dryer lint damp and sticky and help mold grow in front-load washers. Regular wiping, monthly seal cleaning, yearly vent cleaning and a yearly check-up keep most of this damage in check.
How Salt Air Attacks Metal
Ocean waves throw tiny drops of salt water into the air. Wind carries them inland, where they land on everything, including the parts inside and outside your appliances. When salt mixes with moisture, it speeds up rust on steel and corrosion on other metals.
- Burner grates and caps on gas ranges and cooktops
- Oven and dishwasher door hinges
- Screws, brackets and legs on garage appliances
- Dryer drums and outside vent hoods
- Electrical contacts, which can corrode and cause intermittent faults
Even stainless steel isn't fully immune. Salt film left on its surface can cause small rust spots over time, especially near the beach.
How Fog and Humidity Wear Out Seals and Laundry
Door seals
Rubber gaskets on fridges, freezers, dishwashers and front-load washers dry out, harden and crack faster in damp, salty air. A worn seal lets warm air into a fridge and water out of a dishwasher.
Dryers and vents
Damp air makes lint heavy and sticky. Instead of blowing outside, it clings inside the vent. That slows drying and raises the risk of overheating.
Front-load washers
Moisture lingers in the door boot and drain filter, and mold grows faster when the air never fully dries out.
Which Homes Feel It Most
| Home Location | Main Risk | Extra Care |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean-facing bluffs and beachfront | Heavy salt spray and rust | Wipe metal weekly, check hinges yearly |
| Foggy valleys and hillsides | Constant damp, mold, sticky lint | Clean vents yearly, dry washer gaskets |
| Garages and outdoor laundry | Cold, damp air on bare metal | Keep appliances off wet concrete |
| Homes near harbors | Salt plus damp air | Check vent caps and outdoor units often |

A Simple Coastal Care Routine
Every week
- Wipe stainless surfaces, burner grates and handles with a damp cloth, then dry them.
- Leave the front-load washer door open after the last load.
Every month
- Clean fridge, freezer and dishwasher door seals with warm, soapy water.
- Clean the washer drain filter if you wash sandy beach gear.
- Wash range hood filters.
Every year
- Clean the full dryer vent line and check the outside flap for rust.
- Have hinges, seals and electrical connections checked.
- Vacuum refrigerator condenser coils (twice a year is better).
