What We Fix

Dishwasher Parts We Repair Most

A dishwasher fills, heats, sprays, drains and dries. Each step depends on a few key parts.

Drain Pump and Check Valve

Push dirty water out. A failed pump or stuck valve leaves water sitting in the tub.

Wash Pump and Spray Arms

Send water through the arms. Clogged arms or a weak pump leave food on dishes.

Filters and Sump

Catch food bits. A packed filter causes bad smells, poor cleaning and slow draining.

Water Inlet Valve

Lets water in. A bad valve fills slowly or not at all, and can leak.

Door Latch and Gasket

Seal the door and tell the dishwasher it's safe to run. A bad latch means no start.

Heater and Controls

Heat water and dry dishes. Control boards and sensors run the whole cycle.

Why Dishwashers Stop Draining

Drain problems are the number one dishwasher call we get. The water has to travel from the tub, through a pump, up a hose and into your sink drain or garbage disposal. A block anywhere stops it.

  • Clogged filter at the bottom of the tub, the easiest fix of all.
  • Blocked air gap, the small cap on your sink. Many California homes have one because plumbing code calls for it.
  • Garbage disposal knockout plug still in place after a new disposal is installed.
  • Kinked or crushed drain hose under the sink.
  • Failed drain pump that hums but doesn't move water.

If your sink is backing up too, the problem may be the disposal. See our garbage disposal repair page.

Water Under the Sink?

Dishwasher Leaks Can Damage Cabinets Fast

A slow dishwasher leak can rot cabinet floors and warp hardwood before you notice. If you see water, act right away.

Stop the Cycle

Cancel the cycle and turn off power at the switch or breaker. Don't open the door if it's full of water.

Close the Water Valve

Turn off the small valve under the sink that feeds the dishwasher. Dry the area and put down towels.

Simple Habits for a Cleaner, Longer-Lasting Dishwasher

Most cleaning complaints can be helped with a few small changes. Try these before you call.

  • Clean the filter monthly. Twist it out, rinse it under hot water and put it back.
  • Run the sink hot first so the dishwasher starts with hot water.
  • Use rinse aid. It helps water sheet off and dishes dry.
  • Scrape, don't rinse. Modern detergents need a little food to work on.
  • Don't block the spray arms with tall pans or cutting boards.

FAQs

Dishwasher Repair FAQs

Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Standing water usually means a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or air gap, or a failed drain pump. If you just installed a new garbage disposal, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet may still be in place.

Why are my dishes still dirty after a cycle?

Clogged spray arms, a dirty filter, low water temperature or a weak wash pump are the usual causes. Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting the dishwasher, and clean the filter every month.

Why is my dishwasher leaking?

Leaks often come from a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, a loose water inlet line, or using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent. Too many suds can push water out past the door.

Why won't my dishwasher dry the dishes?

Many newer dishwashers, especially Bosch, dry by condensation rather than a heating element. Rinse aid is needed for good drying. On models with a heater, a failed element or high-limit thermostat can stop drying.

Why are my glasses cloudy?

Cloudy glasses come from either mineral spots or etching. Spots wipe off with vinegar and mean you need more rinse aid. Etching won't wipe off and often comes from too much detergent in soft water.

How long do dishwashers last?

Most dishwashers last 9 to 12 years. Premium brands like Miele are built to last longer. If yours is under 7 years old, repairing is usually the better choice.

Do you install new dishwashers too?

Yes. Our appliance installation service connects water, drain and power, levels the unit and runs a full test cycle.
