How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?

You clean the lint screen after every load, so the vent should be fine, right? Not quite. Lint slips past the screen and builds up inside the vent over time. Here's how often to clean it, how to tell when it's overdue, and what you can safely do yourself.

The Short Answer

Clean the lint screen after every load and have the full dryer vent cleaned at least once a year. Clean it every 6 to 9 months if you have a big household, pets, a long or roof-mounted vent, or live in a damp coastal area where lint clumps faster.

Why Vent Cleaning Matters

The lint screen catches most lint, but not all of it. The rest travels into the vent, where it sticks to the walls and slowly narrows the path. That leads to two big problems:

  • Fire risk. Lint burns easily, and a clogged vent traps heat. According to the National Fire Protection Association, failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires.
  • Wasted time and money. A restricted vent means longer drying times, higher energy bills and extra wear on the dryer's heater and motor.

Your Dryer Vent Cleaning Schedule

Recommended dryer vent cleaning schedule by household
Your SituationClean the Vent Every
1–2 people, short vent12 months
Family of 4 or more6–9 months
Pets that shed6–9 months
Vent longer than about 10 feet or with several turns6–9 months
Roof-mounted vent6 months
Coastal fog belt home6–9 months
Rental or Airbnb with heavy useEvery 6 months or between tenants

And no matter your situation, clean the lint screen before or after every single load.

Signs Your Vent Is Overdue

  • Clothes need more than one cycle to dry.
  • The top of the dryer or the clothes feel unusually hot.
  • You smell a burning or musty odor during a cycle.
  • Lint collects around the outside vent flap.
  • The outside flap barely opens when the dryer runs.
  • The dryer shuts off early or the thermal fuse has blown.

Lint is mostly loose fiber, which is why it burns so easily when it builds up near heat.

If your dryer has stopped heating completely, read why a dryer won’t heat. A clogged vent is one of the top causes.

What You Can Safely Do Yourself

  1. Clean the lint screen after every load. Wash it with warm, soapy water once a month to remove dryer sheet film.
  2. Vacuum the lint trap housing with a narrow attachment.
  3. Check the outside vent hood. Remove visible lint and make sure the flap opens and closes freely.
  4. Inspect the transition duct behind the dryer. Replace thin foil or plastic ducts with metal ones.
  5. Feel the airflow. With the dryer on, you should feel strong, warm air at the outside vent.

Cleaning the full vent line, especially long runs through walls, ceilings or roofs, is best done with professional brushes and vacuums so lint isn't pushed deeper.

Why Coastal Homes Need It More Often

In Pacifica and nearby Coastside towns, damp fog makes lint heavy and sticky. Instead of blowing out, it clings to the inside of the vent. Salt air can also rust outside vent flaps so they stick shut, and birds like to nest in warm vents. Learn more in our guide to how salt air and fog affect appliances.

When to Call a Professional

  • Your vent is long, has several turns or exits through the roof.
  • You see a crushed or disconnected duct.
  • Birds or rodents have nested in the vent.
  • You smell burning or the dryer is overheating.

Our dryer vent cleaning service clears the full line and measures airflow before and after. If the dryer itself needs work, our dryer repair team can handle it in the same visit.

FAQs

Dryer Vent Cleaning Schedule: FAQs

How often should I clean my dryer lint screen?

Clean it before or after every load. Once a month, wash it with warm, soapy water to remove film from dryer sheets.

Is once a year enough for dryer vent cleaning?

For most small households with short vents, yes. Larger families, pet owners, long or roof vents and damp coastal homes should clean every 6 to 9 months.

Is a clogged dryer vent a fire risk?

Yes. Lint is very flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat near it. Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires.

How do I know my dryer vent is clogged?

Long drying times, a hot dryer cabinet, a burning smell, lint around the outside flap and weak airflow outside are all common signs.

Which parts of the vent can I clean on my own?

You can clean the lint screen, trap housing and outside hood. Long or complex vent runs are best cleaned by a professional with the right brushes and vacuum.
