Washer Not Spinning: What to Check

Pulling out a load of dripping wet clothes is frustrating, especially when the laundry basket is already full. The good news is that many spin problems have simple causes. Here's what to check first, and what each sign means.

The Short Answer

A washer usually won't spin because the load is unbalanced, the water isn't draining, or a safety part like the lid switch or door lock isn't telling the washer it's safe to spin. On older top-loaders, a worn drive belt or motor coupler is also common.

Start With These Quick Checks

  • Rebalance the load. One heavy item, like a wet bath mat or wetsuit, can stop the spin. Add a few towels to balance it.
  • Make sure it's level. Rock the washer gently. If it wobbles, adjust the feet.
  • Close the lid or door firmly. The washer won't spin unless the lid switch or door lock engages.
  • Run a drain and spin cycle on its own to see if the drum moves.
  • Reset it. Unplug the washer for one minute, then plug it back in.

No Drain, No Spin

Washers are designed not to spin with water in the tub. If the water isn't draining, the spin cycle won't start. That makes drain problems one of the most common reasons for a no-spin complaint.

  • Front-loaders: open the small panel at the bottom front and clean the drain pump filter. Coins, hair ties and beach sand collect here.
  • All washers: check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks.
  • Listen: a humming pump that moves no water is likely jammed.

Top-Load vs. Front-Load Causes

Top-load washers

  • Lid switch or lid lock that no longer senses the lid is closed.
  • Drive belt that's stretched or broken.
  • Motor coupler that cracks after years of heavy loads.
  • Shifter or clutch on some models that changes between wash and spin.

Front-load washers

  • Door lock that won't latch or confirm it's locked.
  • Clogged drain pump filter.
  • Worn tub bearings, often with a loud roar before spin stops.
  • Motor or control board problems on some direct-drive models.

A working spin cycle means lighter loads, shorter dryer times and laundry that's done on schedule.

When to Call a Technician

  • The washer still won't spin after you balance the load and clean the filter.
  • You hear grinding, squealing or a loud roar.
  • The door or lid won't unlock with water inside.
  • You smell burning from the motor area.

Our washer repair team tests pumps, locks, belts and motors and fixes the real cause. Please don't force a locked front-load door. That can break the lock and make the repair cost more.

FAQs

Washer Not Spinning: FAQs

Why does my washer fill and wash but not spin?

The most common reasons are an unbalanced load, water that isn't draining, or a lid switch or door lock that isn't confirming the washer is closed.

Can an unbalanced load stop a washer from spinning?

Yes. Many washers stop or slow the spin if one side is much heavier. Spread clothes evenly and add a few towels to balance heavy items.

Why won't my front-load washer door open after it stops spinning?

The door stays locked while there's water in the drum. Run a drain and spin cycle. If it still won't open, the door lock or a control part may have failed.

How much does it cost to fix a washer that won't spin?

It depends on the cause. Clearing a drain filter costs little or nothing, while a new pump, lock or belt costs more. We quote the price before starting any work.

Is it worth repairing a washer that won't spin?

Usually, yes, if the washer is under about 8 to 10 years old. Pumps, belts, locks and couplers are affordable parts.
